Certification before the tax question
Brazil requires INMETRO certification for a range of regulated products, ANATEL homologation for telecom and radio equipment, and ANVISA registration for health, cosmetic and food products. Each has its own applicant and label requirements, and a foreign seller normally works through a Brazilian importer or representative.
The certification is product-specific and can take months. That timeline belongs in the launch plan, not in the week the first container is booked.
The landed cost is a stack, not a rate
Import taxation combines federal and state charges: duty, IPI, ICMS and others, with different bases. The effective burden is much higher than the duty line alone, and it varies by state and by product. A single percentage in a price sheet will be wrong in at least one destination.
Remessa Conforme simplifies clearance for participating cross-border e-commerce sellers, but it does not remove the tax. Model the full stack with the landed cost calculator and confirm the state rate for the destination.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Brazilian company?
For ongoing sales and registrations, a local importer or representative is normally required. The exact structure depends on the product and the sales channel.
Does Remessa Conforme make imports tax-free?
No. It simplifies clearance and collection for participating sellers; taxes still apply.
Is ANATEL required for Wi-Fi products?
Radio and telecom products generally require ANATEL homologation. Confirm the category before shipping.
