No inventory, but no free lunch · Your store, your traffic problem
Print on demand on Shopify
Shopify gives control over branding and checkout, but you must bring the traffic and configure shipping, taxes and fulfillment.
Key facts
| Storefront | The seller controls the domain, theme and checkout experience |
|---|---|
| Integration | POD providers connect through apps or direct API |
| Traffic | The seller must acquire customers; Shopify does not provide marketplace demand |
| Payments | Payment processing fees and third-party gateway rules apply |
| Shipping | Rates and profiles must be configured; provider shipping costs still apply |
| Taxes | The seller is responsible for tax registration and collection where required |
| Official source | Shopify and provider integration documentation |
Control comes with acquisition cost
A marketplace brings buyers; a Shopify store brings freedom. The trade-off is that every visitor must be earned through search, social, email or ads. A store with no traffic sells nothing.
Before launching, decide where the first 100 visitors will come from. If the answer is only paid ads, model the cost per acquisition against the contribution margin.
Test fulfillment before scaling
Place a real order through the store and follow it to delivery. Check the confirmation email, tracking sync and the packaging. Integration gaps are cheaper to find on one order than on a hundred.
Set clear shipping profiles by destination. A single worldwide profile can underprice remote or cross-border orders.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify include customers?
No. It provides the storefront and tools; you must bring traffic through search, social, email or ads.
Can I connect multiple POD providers?
Yes, through apps or APIs. You need clear product mappings and fulfillment rules to avoid duplicate or wrong shipments.
