How to look up an HS code

A practical lookup sequence: describe the goods, read the notes, search the official tariff, record the reasoning and request a ruling when needed.

Key facts

Step 1Describe material, function, composition, packaging and intended use
Step 2Read the relevant section and chapter notes
Step 3Search the destination's official tariff database
Step 4Compare candidate headings using the GRI order
Step 5Record the full national code, rate and date checked
Step 6Request a binding ruling for high-value or repeated imports

Write the product description first

Before opening a tariff, write a factual description: what it is, what it is made of, how it works, what it is used for and how it is presented for sale. Include the parts that could change the classification, such as a battery, a motor or a textile composition.

A precise description makes the tariff search faster and gives you something to attach to the entry file.

Use the destination database, not a copy

Tariff data changes. Use the official database for the country of import and note the date. A third-party lookup site can help you find candidates, but the official line is what the entry will use.

For repeated products, review the code at least when the tariff edition changes or when the product specification changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is a free HS lookup site reliable?

It can help you find a candidate, but the official destination tariff is the authority. Verify the full national line and current measures.

When should I request a binding ruling?

When the product is high-value, the classification is ambiguous or you import repeatedly. A ruling gives legal certainty for the described goods.

Tell me when the rules change

De minimis thresholds, import tax rates and marketplace fee schedules move more often than most price lists. Leave an address and we will send a short note when one of the tracked markets changes.
