The lines between revenue and payout · Who collects the tax
Marketplace facilitator VAT
In many jurisdictions the marketplace collects and remits VAT or GST. That does not remove the seller's registration and record duties.

Who collects the tax
Marketplace facilitator laws shift the collection duty to the platform for many sales. The seller may still need to register, file a return and reconcile the platform's reports. Assuming the platform handles everything can lead to an unfiled registration or a mismatch.
The rules differ by country and by the seller's tax residency. A US seller on a European marketplace, a UK seller on a US marketplace and a local seller in the same country can have different obligations for the same sale.
Price and records
Decide whether the displayed price includes tax. If the marketplace collects tax on top of the price, the seller's revenue is the pre-tax amount. If the price is tax-inclusive, the tax is carved out of the displayed price and the revenue is lower than it looks.
Reconcile the platform tax report with the filing every period. The report is evidence; the filing is the obligation. Keep both, and keep the product tax code accurate, because a wrong code can change the rate applied.
Frequently asked questions
Does the marketplace pay the VAT for me?
For facilitated sales in many jurisdictions, the marketplace collects and remits the tax. The seller can still have registration, filing and record-keeping duties.
Do I still need a VAT registration?
It depends on the country, your residency and the sales. Some sellers still need a registration even when the platform collects the tax. Take local advice.
Why does my payout differ from the sale price?
The payout is usually net of tax collected, fees and any reserves. Reconcile the payout report rather than the order page.
What records should I keep?
Marketplace tax reports, payout statements, product tax codes and your own filings. They should reconcile to the same sales.
