Product labeling requirements
Labels can require origin, importer identity, warnings, language and a responsible person; the rules depend on product and market.
Key facts
| Origin | Many markets require a country-of-origin mark on the product or packaging |
|---|---|
| Identity | Manufacturer, importer or responsible person name and address |
| Warnings | Safety, age, material or usage warnings for regulated categories |
| Language | The destination market's required language or languages |
| Traceability | Batch, lot or serial number for recalls |
| EU GPSR | Consumer products generally need an EU responsible person and traceability information |
| US | FTC, CPSC and FDA rules apply by product category |
| Official source | Destination regulator and product-specific rules |
The label is a compliance artifact
A label that looks professional can still fail because it omits the importer, the origin or a required warning. The marketplace may remove the listing, and customs may refuse the goods.
Build a label checklist per product and market before the packaging artwork is approved. Changing a label after printing is expensive.
GPSR changed the EU baseline
The EU General Product Safety Regulation adds traceability and responsible-person requirements for many consumer products. A seller outside the EU may need an economic operator established in the EU.
This is not only a label line. The responsible person must be identifiable and able to provide safety information. Confirm the exact obligation for your category.
Frequently asked questions
Can the supplier's label be used as-is?
Not necessarily. The label must meet the destination market's rules, and the importer or responsible person may need to be named.
Does the EU GPSR apply to private label sellers?
It can. Many consumer products need an EU responsible person and traceability, even when the seller is outside the EU.
