Brand ownership without owning the factory · Same factory, different control
White label vs private label
White label is a stock product branded by many sellers; private label implies more control over specification and brand.
Key facts
| White label | A standard product available to many sellers |
|---|---|
| Private label | A product sold under the seller's brand, often with custom packaging or specification |
| Differentiation | White label competes on price and marketing; private label can compete on product |
| MOQ | White label often has lower MOQ; custom private label usually higher |
| Tooling | Custom private label may require molds, dies or formulation work |
| Risk | White label is faster to launch; private label is harder to copy |
| Official source | Supplier contracts and product specifications |
The label does not create the moat
If ten sellers buy the same white label product and change only the logo, the customer can compare them on price and reviews. A private label specification can create a real difference: a material, a size, a formulation or a bundle the others do not have.
Before paying for customization, check whether the change is visible and valuable to the buyer. A different box color is not a product advantage.
Start white, move private
A common path is to launch a white label product to test demand, then invest in a custom specification once the listing has sales. That reduces the upfront tooling risk while preserving the option to differentiate.
Keep the supplier relationship and the specification rights clear so the upgrade does not require starting over.
Frequently asked questions
Is white label cheaper?
Usually, because the product is already developed and MOQ may be lower. Custom private label adds tooling, sampling and higher minimums.
Can I sell a white label product as private label?
Yes. The distinction is about control and differentiation, not a legal category. Your brand and compliance obligations still apply.
