One EU rule, two strong platforms
The Dutch VAT rate is 21%, and the EU customs changes apply without a national variation: no duty exemption below €150 after 30 June 2026, a temporary €3 duty until 30 June 2028, and import VAT from the first euro.
What is different is the platform mix. Bol.com is a Dutch and Belgian marketplace with a strong local trust position, and it often sits alongside Amazon.nl rather than behind it. Listing on both can duplicate content and split reviews, so the channel decision deserves the same attention as the VAT calculation.
Cross-border fulfilment and the EU importer
The Netherlands is a common entry point for EU logistics, but customs clearance at Rotterdam or Schiphol does not make the goods Dutch for VAT purposes. The importer of record, the VAT registration and the place of supply still need to be established for each sales model.
For parcels, IOSS keeps the buyer from paying VAT at the door. For bulk imports into an EU warehouse, the importer pays import VAT at clearance and recovers it in the VAT return, which is a cash-flow exercise rather than a cost — provided the registration exists.
Frequently asked questions
Is Bol.com a marketplace or a retailer?
Bol.com operates both its own retail and a marketplace for third-party sellers. The fee schedule and the fulfilment options depend on which model you join.
Does importing through the Netherlands simplify EU VAT?
It can simplify logistics, but the VAT position still depends on the importer of record and the sales model. Clearance location alone does not determine the VAT treatment.
