De Minimis Checker
Enter the destination and the declared value to see the threshold, the verdict and the duty and tax that would apply. Canada has an origin selector because US and Mexican origin goods get a different treatment.
De minimis is not one global number
Every market sets its own low-value treatment, and the numbers range from zero effective relief in the United States to AUD 1,000 in Australia. The treatment also differs in kind: some thresholds remove duty only, some remove tax as well, and some apply only to specific shipping channels.
Canada is the clearest example of origin mattering. The general courier remission is CAD 20, but goods of US or Mexican origin can qualify for CAD 150 duty relief and CAD 40 tax relief under the trade agreement. The checker exposes that choice rather than hiding it behind one number.
What changed in 2026
The United States suspended its $800 de minimis for all countries, so duty now applies from the first dollar. The European Union ended its €150 duty exemption on 30 June 2026 and replaced it with a temporary €3 flat duty for parcels up to €150 until 30 June 2028. The United Kingdom is consulting on removing its £135 duty relief, with implementation targeted by March 2029.
These are the rules that change a price list most often, because they turn a duty-free parcel into a dutiable one without changing the product or the shipping cost. The checker applies the current rule and states which one it used.

Frequently asked questions
Is a parcel below the threshold free of all charges?
Not usually. The threshold often removes duty but not import VAT or GST, and the carrier may still charge a handling fee. The checker separates duty from tax so the difference is visible.
Is the threshold per item or per parcel?
It is generally assessed per consignment, not per item. Splitting an order into several parcels can change the treatment, but deliberate splitting to avoid duty has consequences of its own.
Why does Canada ask for the origin?
Because US and Mexican origin goods qualify for higher duty and tax relief under the trade agreement than goods from other countries. The origin changes the threshold that applies.
Does postal shipping change the result?
Sometimes. Postal consignments can follow a different remission route and a different handling fee from courier shipments, so the checker notes when the shipping method matters.
