Cross-border selling · The cost that survives a refund
Amazon return processing fee
A refund returns the sale price, not the cost of getting the unit back. Here is how to model returns before they eat the margin.
Key facts
| What triggers the cost | A customer return, a refund, and a unit that cannot be resold as new |
|---|---|
| Referral fee | Normally refunded when the order is refunded under standard policy |
| Return processing | Applies to some categories and conditions; confirm the current fee schedule |
| Return shipping | Who pays depends on the reason, the marketplace and the programme |
| Resale | A returned unit may be resold, liquidated or destroyed; each outcome has a different recovery |
| Planning rule | Use the observed return rate for the category, not the best month |
The refund is not the loss
The visible event is a refund; the loss is the difference between the refund, the fees that are not returned, the shipping you pay and what you recover from the unit. A returned item that cannot be sold again loses its full landed cost, which is often larger than the referral fee on the original order.
Separate the four lines: refunded revenue, referral fee not refunded, return processing and shipping, and recovery from resale. The return-cost calculator reports each one, then converts the monthly total into a cost per order sold so it can be added to the unit economics.
Build the return rate into the launch price
Returns are predictable at the category level even when individual orders are not. Apparel, footwear and products with sizing or fit risk carry higher rates than consumables; a new listing inherits the category baseline before it has its own history.
Add the expected return cost per order to the contribution calculation and re-check the break-even price. If the product only works at a zero-return assumption, the price is too low or the product has a fit problem that no fee change will fix.
Frequently asked questions
Does Amazon refund the referral fee when a customer returns an item?
Under standard policy the referral fee is refunded with the order, but some fees and costs are not. Check the current returns policy and fee schedule for your category and marketplace.
What is a return processing fee?
A fee charged on certain returns, depending on the category, condition and programme. It is separate from the refund and from return shipping; confirm the current schedule before pricing.
Can I resell a returned unit?
Sometimes. If the unit is returned in new condition it may be resellable; otherwise it may be liquidated or disposed of. The resale recovery percentage in the calculator lets you model both cases.
Should I use the category return rate or my own?
Use your own once you have enough orders; before that, use the category baseline and treat it as an assumption to replace. A single good month is not a return rate.
