The referral fee is the headline, not the cost

A 15% referral fee sounds manageable until fulfilment, storage, advertising and returns are added. The number that decides whether a product works is the total take rate: every marketplace charge divided by the sale price. A seller can pay 15% referral and still lose 35% of revenue once the other lines land.

Model the lines in the order they are charged. Referral and payment processing come off the sale first, then per-unit fulfilment, then the monthly subscription spread across units, then advertising, then the expected return loss. The remainder is the contribution you actually use to pay for goods and freight.

Price the product after the fee stack, not before

Start from the contribution you need, add the fee stack, and solve for the price. The calculator does that in reverse: enter a price and see the contribution, then change the price or the fulfilment fee until the contribution covers your target. A product that only works at a price the market will not pay is not a product problem; it is a fee-stack problem found early.

Check the fee schedule for the exact category and marketplace before committing. Rates change by notice, and the category assignment can move a product into a different referral band.

Frequently asked questions

Is the referral fee the same in every category?

No. Referral fees are set per category and range from a few percent to over 40% in some categories, with a per-item minimum in some cases. Check the fee schedule for your exact category and marketplace.

Do I need the Professional plan?

Not necessarily. The Individual plan charges per item sold instead of a monthly fee, which can be cheaper at low volume. The Professional plan usually pays off once you sell more than a few dozen items a month.

Should advertising be treated as a fee?

Treat it as a cost line from the first month. Without reviews or sales history, paid placement is often the only way to get impressions, so a contribution calculation that leaves ads out overstates profit.

Why does a refunded order still cost money?

The referral fee is normally refunded with the order, but return processing, return shipping, storage on the returned unit and the loss of a resale can remain. The return-cost calculator separates those lines.
