Which batteries need a passport

The passport applies to each LMT battery, each industrial battery with a capacity greater than 2 kWh and each EV battery placed on the market or put into service. Portable batteries and SLI batteries are outside the passport rule, although they still carry labels and registration duties.

The record is per battery, not just per model. Model-level data can be shared, but the passport also carries information specific to the individual battery.

Start the data work early

The passport is built from data that comes from several suppliers: material composition, carbon footprint, recycled content, performance and durability, and supply-chain due diligence. Waiting until 2027 usually means chasing suppliers for data that was never collected.

Annex XIII sets out the data fields and the three access layers. Public data is open; authority data goes to market surveillance and notified bodies; legitimate-interest data goes to repairers, remanufacturers and recyclers.

Frequently asked questions

Do portable batteries need a battery passport?

No. The passport covers LMT batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh and EV batteries. Portable and SLI batteries still need labels, registration and collection duties.

Is the passport one record per model or per battery?

Per battery. Model-level information is shared, but the passport also carries data specific to the individual battery, so serial-level traceability is part of the design.
