EU Batteries Regulation Checker
Select the battery category, weight, capacity and group turnover. The checker shows which obligations under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 are already in force, which fall in the next 12 months and which come later, with the article-level source.
The regulation follows the battery, not the product
The regulation covers portable, LMT, SLI, industrial and EV batteries placed on the EU market, including batteries built into appliances and vehicles. A sealed battery of 5 kg or less is normally portable; an LMT battery drives a light electric vehicle and is 25 kg or less; industrial and EV batteries are defined by their design and use, not by the name on the listing.
The producer is the business that places the battery on the market under its own name or brand, or imports it from outside the EU. Selling through a marketplace does not move that duty to the platform, and a battery inside a product still needs its own registration where the national scheme treats it separately.
The deadlines that change a launch plan
Producer registration, the separate collection symbol and the due diligence chapter started on 18 August 2025. The general label and capacity information are scheduled for 18 August 2026, but move to 18 months after the implementing act if that is later. Removability and the battery passport start on 18 February 2027. Recycled content documentation, portable performance thresholds and the LMT carbon footprint declaration follow on 18 August 2028.
The passport covers LMT batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh and EV batteries. It is a QR-linked electronic record with public, authority and legitimate-interest layers, so the data has to be collected before the deadline, not on the day.
What the checker does not decide
It does not classify a borderline product, set national fees or confirm that a member-state registration is complete. National registers, collection schemes and reporting formats differ, and several EU dates are tied to delegated or implementing acts that can move them later.
Use the output as a launch checklist and evidence map. Confirm the classification with the manufacturer, keep the registration numbers and declarations with the product file, and check the current regulation text before printing labels or committing a shipment.

Frequently asked questions
Do batteries built into a product need their own registration?
In general, yes. The regulation covers batteries incorporated in appliances, light means of transport and vehicles. The producer registration is per member state and separate from the electrical-equipment registration that the device may need.
Who counts as the producer under the EU Batteries Regulation?
The business that places the battery on the EU market under its own name or brand, or the importer bringing it from outside the EU. A marketplace seller established outside the EU is not automatically covered by the platform's registration.
When does the battery passport start and which batteries need one?
From 18 February 2027 for each LMT battery, each industrial battery above 2 kWh and each EV battery. It is an electronic record linked by a QR code, with public, authority and legitimate-interest data layers.
Does the €40 million due diligence threshold exempt small sellers from everything?
No. It exempts operators below the threshold from the due diligence chapter only. Registration, labelling, collection, removability and the other producer duties still apply according to the battery category and the market.
Are the dates in the checker final?
Most core dates are in the regulation, but the label, carbon footprint and recycled content dates can move with delegated or implementing acts. The checker flags the published date and the condition attached to it; confirm the current act before relying on a deadline.
