One number per stream

The UIN is issued per producer and per EPR stream. Packaging, electrical equipment and textiles each have their own registration. A packaging UIN does not cover WEEE.

Marketplaces ask for the UIN and check it against the ADEME register. The number has to match the company that is placing the product on the French market.

The eco-contribution is a real unit cost

French eco-contributions are charged by weight and material, with modifiers for recyclability and other criteria. For light, low-value items the contribution can be a meaningful share of the landed cost, so model it per unit rather than per year.

From August 2026 the EU packaging regulation adds a harmonised authorised-representative requirement for producers not established in a member state. Check the current French guidance before appointing a representative.

Frequently asked questions

Is the UIN the same as a VAT number?

No. The UIN is an EPR registration identifier issued through ADEME. It is separate from VAT and from the company registration number.

Do I need a French company?

No, but a producer outside France normally needs an authorised representative and must still register for the UIN and join the eco-organisation.

Does every product need the Triman mark?

Household packaging in scope generally carries the Triman and the sorting information. The exact format depends on the packaging and the market; check the current CITEO guidance.
