EPR requirements for UK, Germany and France
Extended producer responsibility makes the business that places packaging or products on a market pay for collecting and recycling them. The trigger, the registry and the fee base differ by country. These entries cover the three markets that most often block a cross-border listing: the United Kingdom, Germany and France, plus the EU packaging regulation that starts applying in August 2026.
Registration is a listing gate, not a back-office task
Marketplaces and fulfilment providers increasingly check producer registration numbers before a listing goes live. A missing number can hold the listing, the payout or the stock. The check is mechanical: the registry is public, and the number is either there or it is not.
The three markets below use different registries and different triggers. A German LUCID number does not satisfy France, and a UK EPR account does not cover Plastic Packaging Tax. Treat each market as a separate file.
Fees follow weight and material, not revenue
Packaging fees are normally calculated from the tonnes of each material placed on the market, adjusted by recyclability. Electrical and battery schemes usually charge a fixed registration plus a volume-based fee. Revenue matters mainly for the UK producer-size tests.
Use the UK calculator for a worked estimate of the disposal fee and Plastic Packaging Tax, then replace the illustrative rates with the figures in your own registration account before pricing a product.
