Moving the goods without losing the margin · A container or a share of one
FCL versus LCL
Full container load is cheaper per cubic metre at volume; LCL lets you ship less but adds handling and consolidation risk.
Key facts
| FCL | One shipper uses a full container; priced per container and lane |
|---|---|
| LCL | Multiple shippers share a container; priced per cubic metre or tonne, with origin and destination handling |
| Cost crossover | The break-even depends on the lane and the cargo; LCL becomes relatively expensive as volume approaches a container |
| Risk | LCL involves more handling and consolidation, which increases damage and delay exposure |
| Cash | Both tie up inventory in transit; LCL can add consolidation days |
| Official source | The forwarder quote for the specific lane, including all origin and destination charges |
A container or a share of one
FCL is priced as a container, so the cost per cubic metre falls as you fill it. LCL is priced as a share, which is convenient for smaller volumes but includes consolidation, deconsolidation and handling at both ends. The quote per cubic metre can look low until the destination charges are added.
The crossover is not a fixed number. Dense cargo, awkward dimensions and a lane with few consolidations can make FCL competitive earlier. Light, bulky cargo can make LCL expensive because the charge is based on volume.
The decision beyond price
LCL exposes the cargo to other shippers' handling and to a consolidation schedule. For fragile, high-value or time-sensitive goods, FCL can be cheaper after damage and delay are counted. For a test order, LCL lets you validate demand without committing a container.
Model the cash cycle as well. A container that arrives full but sells slowly ties up cash and storage; two LCL shipments can match supply to demand more closely. The cheapest freight is not always the cheapest inventory policy.
Frequently asked questions
At what volume should I switch to FCL?
There is no universal threshold. Compare the all-in FCL quote with the all-in LCL quote for the same lane, including origin and destination charges, at your actual volume.
Is LCL riskier?
It involves more handling and consolidation, which increases the chance of damage and delay. Insurance and packaging should reflect that.
Can I mix FCL and LCL?
Yes. Some sellers use FCL for core SKUs and LCL or air for test SKUs and replenishment.
Does LCL take longer?
It can, because of consolidation and deconsolidation. Compare the door-to-door transit, not just the sailing time.
