CBM calculator

Enter the carton dimensions in centimetres and the number of cartons. The calculator returns the volume per carton, the total shipment volume and the container equivalents for a chosen container type.

From carton to container

CBM is the volume of the shipment in cubic metres. Carton dimensions in centimetres multiply to cubic centimetres; divide by one million for cubic metres, then multiply by the carton count. The container equivalent divides the total by the usable volume of the container.

The usable volume is lower than the nominal capacity because cartons do not fill every gap and the container has weight and door constraints. A 20ft container is often planned at around 28–33 cbm, a 40ft at around 58–67 cbm, depending on the cargo and the loading pattern.

Volume is not the only constraint

A container can be full by volume and still be under the weight limit, or full by weight with space left. Dense cargo hits the weight limit first; light, bulky cargo hits the volume limit. Check both against the forwarder's payload limit.

The calculator does not account for pallets, dunnage or an uneven load. If the cartons are palletised, add the pallet footprint and the height, and ask the forwarder for the practical load plan.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert carton dimensions to CBM?

Multiply length, width and height in centimetres, divide by one million, then multiply by the number of cartons.

How many cartons fit in a 20ft container?

It depends on the carton size, the loading pattern and the weight limit. The calculator gives a volume estimate; the forwarder confirms the practical load.

Does this include pallet space?

No. Add the pallet dimensions and any dunnage before comparing with a container capacity.

Why is the container capacity lower than the nominal volume?

Because cartons, pallets and loading gaps reduce the usable space, and the weight limit can bind before the volume does.
