The lines between revenue and payout · The fixed line on media
Closing fees
Some categories charge a fixed closing fee per item. On low prices, it changes the margin arithmetic.
Key facts
| What it is | A fixed per-item fee charged on sale in certain categories |
|---|---|
| Typical scope | Books, music, video and other media categories on some marketplaces |
| Stacking | It is charged in addition to the referral fee, not instead of it |
| Price sensitivity | On a low-priced item, a fixed fee can be a large share of the sale |
| Model | Add the closing fee to the per-unit cost before calculating margin |

The fixed line on media
A percentage fee scales with price; a closing fee does not. On a ten-dollar item, a one-dollar closing fee is ten percent before the referral fee is counted. On a hundred-dollar item, the same fee is one percent. That is why low-price media is a different business from high-price media.
The fee is easy to miss when a seller copies a fee model from another category. Build the category fee stack from the schedule and mark which lines are percentage-based and which are fixed.
Price with the fixed fee in view
For low-price items, the fixed lines can make a seemingly healthy markup unprofitable. The response is not always a higher price: bundling, multi-packs or a different category can spread the fixed fee across more revenue.
Check whether the fee applies per unit or per order. A multi-pack that ships as one order may change the effective cost, depending on the marketplace rules.
Frequently asked questions
Which categories have closing fees?
The scope is marketplace-specific and commonly includes media categories. Check the fee schedule for your exact category.
Is the closing fee refunded on a return?
It depends on the marketplace policy. Do not assume every fee line is reversed with the refund.
Does it apply to FBA and FBM?
Closing fees are generally category-level and apply regardless of fulfilment method, but verify the specific schedule.
Can I avoid it by changing category?
Only if the product genuinely belongs in another category. Misclassifying a product to avoid a fee creates a policy risk.
