Referral fee tiers
Referral fees vary by category and can include a per-item minimum. The headline rate is not the take rate.

The percentage is category-specific
A 15% referral fee is a common headline, but categories range from single digits to over 40%, and some have a per-item minimum. A low-priced accessory can pay a minimum that is a much larger share of the sale than the headline percentage suggests.
Category assignment is not always under the seller's control. A product with multiple uses can be moved by the platform, and the new category can change both the referral fee and the approval requirements. Check the category on the live listing, not only in the upload file.
Model the total take rate
Referral is the first line, not the whole cost. Add fulfilment, storage, returns processing, currency conversion and advertising, then divide by the sale price. That number is comparable across marketplaces; the referral percentage alone is not.
For low-price items, the fixed lines dominate. For high-price items, the percentage lines dominate. The same product can be viable on one platform and unviable on another without any change in the referral rate.
Frequently asked questions
Is the referral fee charged on shipping?
It depends on the marketplace and category. Some include shipping in the fee base, others do not. Check the fee schedule for your marketplace.
Can the category change after listing?
Yes. The platform can reclassify a product, which can change the fee and the approval requirements. Monitor the category on the live listing.
Why does a cheap item pay a high effective rate?
Because a per-item minimum referral fee can exceed the percentage calculation on a low price. The effective rate falls as the price rises.
Do referral fees get refunded on returns?
Commonly the referral fee is refunded when an order is refunded, but other fees such as returns processing may remain. Check the specific marketplace policy.
