The lines between revenue and payout · Gated categories and approvals
Restricted products
Some categories require approval, documentation or a licence before listing. Selling first and asking later risks the inventory.
Key facts
| What it means | A category or product requires approval, documentation or a licence before it can be listed |
|---|---|
| Common areas | Health, supplements, medical devices, pesticides, batteries, children's products, automotive and some electronics |
| Evidence | Safety data sheets, test reports, certificates, invoices and images of the product and packaging |
| Sequence | Get approval before the purchase order, not after the container arrives |
| Consequence | A removal can strand inventory and trigger account action |

Gated categories and approvals
A restricted-product rule is a gate, not a suggestion. The category may require a licence, a test report, a safety data sheet or simply an application. The requirements differ by marketplace and can change without much notice.
The expensive mistake is to buy inventory first. A container of a gated product that cannot be listed is a stranded asset, and the return freight can exceed the product value. Check the gate before the purchase order.
Build the evidence file first
Collect the documents the marketplace asks for before applying: product images, packaging images, test reports, certificates and supplier invoices. The invoice should show the product and the supplier, and the images should match the listing.
If the approval is refused, ask which requirement failed and fix the specific gap. Reapplying with the same file usually produces the same result. If the product is genuinely restricted, the right answer may be a different product, not a different application.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my product is restricted?
Search the marketplace restricted-products page for the category and the destination, and check the listing flow for an approval requirement before purchasing inventory.
What documents are usually required?
It depends on the category. Common requests include test reports, certificates, safety data sheets, supplier invoices and product and packaging images.
Can I list first and get approval later?
That risks removal and stranded inventory. Approval should come before the purchase order.
Do the rules differ by country?
Yes. A product allowed in one marketplace can be restricted in another. Check each destination separately.
