The lines between revenue and payout · Refunds are not free
Returns processing fee
A refunded order can still cost a referral reversal, a returns processing fee and the loss of a resalable unit.
Key facts
| What it is | A per-unit fee for processing a returned item in some categories |
|---|---|
| Category scope | Commonly applied to apparel and footwear, with marketplace-specific rules |
| Referral fee | Usually refunded with the order, but not all fee lines are reversed |
| Condition | A returned unit may be resold, returned to you, or disposed depending on condition and programme |
| Model | Return rate multiplied by the per-return loss, including shipping and resale loss |
| Official source | The marketplace returns processing fee schedule and returns policy |
Refunds are not free
A return reverses the sale but not every cost. The referral fee is commonly refunded, while returns processing, return shipping, storage on the returned unit and the difference between a new and a used resale can remain. The result is a per-return loss that is larger than the processing fee alone.
The return rate matters more than the fee for most categories. A one-percent change in return rate can outweigh a small change in the processing fee. Measure the rate by SKU, size and reason code, not only at the account level.
Model the true cost of a return
For each SKU, estimate the return rate, the per-return fee, the shipping cost, the resale recovery and the probability that the unit is unsellable. Multiply and add to the unit economics. A product with a high return rate can look profitable on the sale and lose money over the cohort.
Reduce returns with accurate sizing, clear photos, honest condition descriptions and better packaging. Those changes address the cause; disputing the fee addresses the symptom.
Frequently asked questions

The scope is marketplace-specific and commonly includes apparel and footwear. Check the current schedule for your category.
Is the referral fee refunded?
It is commonly refunded when the order is refunded, but other fees can remain. Read the specific marketplace policy.
Can a returned unit be sold again?
If it is returned in sellable condition, it may re-enter inventory. Otherwise it can be returned to you or disposed, depending on the programme.
