Cross-border selling · Paid due diligence, not free research
Supplier sample round cost
A sample round is a paid due-diligence step: sample price, courier, inspection and time. Compare landed sample cost, not sticker price.
Key facts
| Typical round | 3–4 suppliers for a new product |
|---|---|
| Seller-reported courier | About USD 50–70 per sample in 2026 sourcing threads |
| Sample price | Varies by product; sometimes credited against a first order |
| Inspection | Third-party inspection before mass production is a separate cost |
| What it buys | A physical comparison, a quality baseline and a supplier conversation |
| Decision rule | Compare landed sample cost and quality, not the sticker sample price |
The sample round is paid due diligence
Samples are not free research. Each supplier adds a sample price and a courier charge, and the round only produces a decision if the samples are compared on the same criteria. A USD 20 sample with a USD 60 courier is an USD 80 data point; four of them is a USD 320 decision.
Budget the round before contacting suppliers, then record what each sample cost and what it proved. The sourcing calculator converts the round plus inspection and legal costs into a pre-launch total and a break-even unit count.
Compare landed sample cost, not sticker price
A cheap sample with expensive courier and poor quality is not cheaper than an expensive sample that answers the question. Compare the landed sample cost, the quality against your spec and the supplier's responsiveness. The cheapest sample that fails inspection costs the most because it sends you back to the start.
If a supplier credits the sample against the first order, treat that as a discount on the first order rather than a reduction in the due-diligence cost. The cash still leaves before you know whether the product works.
Frequently asked questions
How many suppliers should I sample?
Three to four is a common starting point for a new product. Fewer reduces the comparison; more increases cost and time without necessarily improving the decision.
How much does courier cost per sample?
Sellers report about USD 50–70 per sample in 2026 threads, but it depends on weight, destination and speed. Get a quote for the actual sample.
Should I pay for third-party inspection?
For a first order, an inspection before mass production is often cheaper than discovering a defect after the goods ship. Budget it as part of the pre-launch cost.
