Remote and delivery-area surcharges
An extra charge for addresses outside a carrier's standard delivery network, often larger than the base rate on small parcels.
Key facts
| Trigger | Destination postcode or address outside the standard network |

| Form | Flat fee, per-kilogram fee or percentage, depending on the carrier |
| When charged | Usually per shipment or per package |

Free shipping needs a remote-area exception
A single remote-area order can wipe out the margin on several normal orders. If you offer free shipping, either exclude remote postcodes or price the risk into the average.
Check the buyer's postcode before promising a delivery date and cost. The address is known at checkout, so the rule can be applied automatically.
The cheapest carrier changes by address
A carrier that is cheapest for urban addresses may be the most expensive for remote ones. Compare the total, including the remote surcharge, for the actual destination.
For international sales, check both the destination country and the specific postcode. Remote lists are not always country-wide.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if an address is remote?
Check the carrier's published remote-area list using the destination postcode before you quote or ship.
Can I pass the surcharge to the buyer?
Yes, if your terms disclose it. Many sellers use a remote-area fee or exclude those postcodes from free shipping.
