Canada Import Duty Calculator
Enter the goods value, freight and duty rate. The calculator applies the general CAD 20 courier remission and adds GST on the duty-paid value; use the de minimis checker for the origin-sensitive US/Mexico thresholds.
Origin changes the threshold
Canada's courier remission depends on where the goods originate. The general remission is CAD 20. Goods of US or Mexican origin can qualify for duty relief up to CAD 150 and tax relief up to CAD 40 under the trade agreement. The same parcel from a different origin can therefore face a different border treatment.
The landed cost calculator applies the general rule. For a US or Mexican origin shipment, check the origin-sensitive result in the de minimis checker before pricing.
GST, HST and brokerage
Canada applies a 5% federal GST, and some provinces use a harmonised HST at a higher rate. Imported goods are generally taxed on the duty-paid value, and the courier usually adds a brokerage or handling charge that is not part of the duty or tax.
Enter the applicable federal or harmonised rate and add the brokerage fee separately. For a small parcel, the brokerage fee can exceed the duty itself, which is why the landed cost often jumps at the point a courier formalises the entry.
Frequently asked questions
What is Canada's de minimis threshold?
The general courier remission is CAD 20. Goods of US or Mexican origin can qualify for higher relief — CAD 150 for duty and CAD 40 for tax. The origin matters.
Does Canada charge tax below the threshold?
The remission can remove duty and tax for qualifying low-value courier shipments, but the rules are specific. The checker separates the duty and tax outcomes so the difference is clear.
What rate should I use for GST/HST?
Use the rate for the destination province: 5% GST in provinces without HST, or the applicable harmonised rate. The calculator accepts any rate you enter.
