EU GPSR for print-on-demand sellers
Consumer products sold into the EU generally need an EU responsible person and traceability information under the GPSR.
Key facts
| Scope | Many consumer products placed on the EU market |
|---|---|
| Responsible person | An EU-established economic operator may be required |
| Traceability | Product and producer identification, batch or lot where applicable |
| Safety information | Warnings and instructions in the required language |
| Marketplace checks | Platforms may request compliance information before listing |
| POD nuance | The seller and the production partner may have different roles |
| Official source | EU GPSR text and national market-surveillance guidance |
The provider is not automatically the responsible person
A print provider may produce and ship the item, but that does not automatically make it the EU responsible person for your brand. The role and obligations depend on the product and the commercial chain.
Confirm the arrangement in writing. A marketplace may ask for the responsible person's name and address before allowing the listing.
Traceability is an operating requirement
If a safety issue appears, the authorities need to identify the product and the producer. Keep the design file, the provider, the batch or order reference and the destination records.
For POD, the production partner changes per order. Your traceability process must still connect the sold item to a responsible entity.
Frequently asked questions
Does GPSR apply to print-on-demand apparel?
It can. Many consumer products fall within the regulation, and the exact obligations depend on the product and the sales channel.
Can my print provider act as the responsible person?
Only if it agrees to the role and meets the requirements. Do not assume production alone creates that responsibility.
