Account health, ads, inventory and fulfilment · The Featured Offer, explained
Buy box eligibility
The buy box is a competitive score, not a permanent setting. The factors you control and the ones you do not.
Key facts
| What it is | The default seller shown when a shopper clicks Add to Cart on an ASIN with multiple offers |
|---|---|
| Core factors | Landed price, fulfilment method, stock availability, delivery speed, account health and customer experience |
| FBA effect | FBA offers usually receive a delivery-speed and eligibility advantage, but price still competes |
| Monitoring | The buy box percentage report shows the share of page views won by each offer |
| Price parity | Offering the same item cheaper elsewhere can affect eligibility under marketplace fair-pricing rules |

It is a score, not a switch
Amazon does not publish the weights, and it can rotate offers by customer segment and time. What is observable is that price, fulfilment and delivery promise dominate. A seller who is five percent above the competing offer and ships slower should expect to lose the box most of the day.
The buy box percentage report is the honest measure. A number near zero with traffic means you are competing on an ASIN where another offer wins; a number that swings during the day suggests a price or inventory race.
The levers you control
Landed price, stock continuity and delivery promise are the three levers. FBA or a fast, tracked seller-fulfilled service improves the promise. Stockouts reset momentum, so the cheapest unit is not always the most profitable if it causes repeated gaps.
Avoid treating the buy box as a toggle. If a repricing rule keeps you in the box at a negative contribution, the win is a loss. Model the fee stack and the return rate before chasing the percentage.
Frequently asked questions
Does FBA guarantee the buy box?
No. FBA usually improves eligibility and delivery promise, but another FBA offer at a lower landed price can still win.
Can ads run without the buy box?
Ads can serve in some placements, but shoppers who click cannot add the item to the cart from your offer. Most sellers pause or reduce spend until the box is regained.
Why does the buy box rotate during the day?
Amazon can rotate offers by customer segment and delivery promise. Price changes, stock changes and repricing rules also shift the winner.
Does seller feedback affect eligibility?
Yes. Account health and customer experience are part of the evaluation, especially when offers are otherwise close.
