PPC placement
Placement multipliers change the bid, not the quality score. Measure the incrementality before raising them.
Key facts
| Placements | Top of search, rest of search, and product pages |
|---|---|
| Multiplier | A percentage adjustment to the base bid for a chosen placement, capped by the campaign settings |
| Typical pattern | Top of search often converts best but costs most; product pages can be cheaper and more exploratory |
| Measurement | Placement report plus total sales, not clicks or attributed sales alone |
| Risk | Raising a multiplier on a broad campaign can buy expensive clicks that would have converted organically |

Placement is a bid multiplier
A placement multiplier raises or lowers your bid in a specific slot. It does not change the relevance of the keyword or the quality of the listing. If the base campaign is broad and the listing converts poorly, a higher multiplier simply buys more of the same problem at a higher price.
Start with the placement report. If top-of-search conversion is materially better after accounting for price and margin, a multiplier can be justified. If product-page conversion is close and cheaper, shift budget there instead of bidding up the most visible slot.
Measure incrementality, not clicks
Attributed sales overstate the effect when the ad captures a shopper who would have bought anyway. Run a holdout or a temporary pause on a stable ASIN and compare total sales, not just ad sales. The difference is the increment.
Review placement changes one at a time and leave them for at least a week. Changing bids, budgets and multipliers together makes the result unreadable, which is how sellers end up with a high-spend campaign and no explanation.
Frequently asked questions
Should I always bid more for top of search?
Only when the placement report shows better contribution after fees and returns, and a holdout suggests the sales are incremental.
Do product-page clicks convert?
They can convert well for comparison and complementary products. The rate depends on the listing and the competitor context, so read the placement report rather than assuming.
How often should I adjust placements?
Change one variable at a time and allow at least a week of data. Daily changes usually measure noise.
Does a placement multiplier affect organic rank?
It can influence sales velocity, which may influence rank indirectly. It is not a direct ranking lever.
