Packaging compliance
Packaging is regulated in several markets. The obligation can sit with the seller even when the marketplace handles tax.
Key facts
| EPR | Extended producer responsibility schemes require registration and fees for packaging placed on the market |
|---|---|
| Labelling | Material codes, recycling instructions and language requirements vary by country |
| Data | Packaging weight and material by component are needed for EPR reporting |
| Marketplace role | Some marketplaces collect EPR numbers or verify registration before listing |
| Design lever | Less material and mono-material packaging can reduce fees and improve recyclability |
| Official source | The national EPR scheme and packaging labelling guidance for each market |
Packaging is regulated
Packaging is not only a marketing surface. In several markets, the seller must register with an EPR scheme, report the packaging placed on the market and pay fees based on material and weight. Some marketplaces ask for the registration number before allowing a listing.
The obligation can apply even when the product is manufactured abroad. The importer or the seller placing the packaged product on the market is often the responsible party. Check each destination separately; the schemes are national.
Design for the fee
Packaging weight and material drive the EPR fee. Reducing a carton, removing a plastic window or switching to a mono-material can lower the fee and simplify recycling. Those changes also affect protection, so test them with the real distribution chain.
Keep the packaging specification and the material data. The EPR report asks for weights by material, and an estimate from a photo is not a substitute. A supplier declaration with the component weights is the evidence you need.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need EPR registration?
In several markets, yes, if you place packaged goods on the market. The requirement and the responsible party depend on the country and the sales channel.
Does the marketplace handle it?
Some marketplaces collect the registration number or offer a compliance service. The seller can still be responsible for registration and reporting.
How are fees calculated?
Commonly by material type and weight placed on the market. The exact formula depends on the national scheme.
Can packaging changes reduce cost?
Yes. Less material and recyclable mono-materials can lower fees and improve the environmental profile, if the protection is maintained.
